On Eagles' Wings: Moshiach (Messiah), Redemption, and the World to Come

On Eagles' Wings: Moshiach (Messiah), Redemption, and the World to Come Review

See more picture

For millennia the Jewish people have awaited the Moshiach. We have prayed for him and longed for his appearance. But how many of us know what part he will play in Jewish destiny, how to identify him, what the messianic era will be like, or why we need Moshiach at all?

Though a plethora of sources touch upon many aspects of the messianic era, the information is scattered throughout traditional writings and is thus very difficult to access. In this important and groundbreaking work, Rabbi Hershel Brand gathers together the teachings of the Sages on the subject and presents them in an illuminating and thought-provoking question-and-answer format.

Awaiting the Moshiach is one of the underpinnings of Jewish belief, one of Maimonides's thirteen principles of faith. On Eagles' Wings takes the lofty yearnings of the Jewish people and brings them firmly down into today's world.

From Berlin to Baghdad: America's Search for Purpose in the Post-cold War World

From Berlin to Baghdad: America's Search for Purpose in the Post-cold War World Review

See more picture

On November 9, 1989, a mob of jubilant Berliners dismantled the wall that had divided their city for nearly forty years; this act of destruction anticipated the momentous demolition of the European communist system. Within two years, the nations of the former Eastern Bloc toppled their authoritarian regimes, and the Soviet Union ceased to exist, fading quietly into the shadows of twentieth century history and memory. By the end of 1991, the United States and other Western nations celebrated the demise of their most feared enemy and reveled in the ideological vindication of capitalism and liberal democracy. As author Hal Brands compellingly demonstrates, however, many American diplomats and politicians viewed the fall of the Soviet empire as a mixed blessing. For more than four decades, containment of communism provided the overriding goal of American foreign policy, allowing generations of political leaders to build domestic consensus on this steady, reliable foundation. From Berlin to Baghdad incisively dissects the numerous unsuccessful attempts to devise a new grand foreign policy strategy that could match the moral clarity and political efficacy of containment. Brands takes a fresh look at the key events and players in recent American history. In the 1990s, George H. W. Bush envisioned the United States as the guardian of a "new world order," and the Clinton administration sought the "enlargement" of America's political and economic influence. However, both presidents eventually came to accept, albeit grudgingly, that America's multifaceted roles, responsibilities, and objectives could not be reduced to a single fundamental principle. During the early years of the George W. Bush administration, it appeared that the tragedies of 9/11 and the subsequent "war on terror" would provide the organizing principle lacking in U.S. foreign policy since the containment of communism became an outdated notion. For a time, most Americans were united in support of Bush's foreign policies and the military incursions into Afghanistan and Iraq. As the swift invasions became grinding occupations, however, popular support for Bush's policies waned, and the rubric of the war on terror lost much of its political and rhetorical cachet. From Berlin to Baghdad charts the often onerous course of recent American foreign policy, from the triumph of the fall of the Berlin Wall to the tragedies of 9/11 and beyond, analyzing the nation's search for purpose in the face of the daunting complexities of the post--Cold War world.

ASIA'S STAR BRANDS

Asian brands have come of age, and no longer can be seen as "also rans" to their Western competitors. The problem is, very little has been know about them. Paul Temporal's book fills this gap, with a series of practical 'brand biographies' which chart both the growing pains and the growth potential of the new contenders from the East. It's vital reading for anyone committed to doing business in Asia. - Miles Young, Chairman, Ogilvy & Mather, Asia Pacific

China and Japan, as well as India and the Emirates, suggest remarkable achievements by local companies in the field of branding and brands. Such a revolution shall impact not only the regional markets but also the world economy and non-Asian firms. Paul Temporal's book provides spectacular business cases and broader key lessons. it should become a major reference for any practitioner and scholar, whether Asian or not. I rank it in my short list of relevant texts about competition and success in the coming years. - Professor Jean-Claude Thoenig, INSEAD

A well-managed brand is the lifeline of any successful company. this helpful book explains how Asian companies have built their brands to create sustainable competitive advantage. Using up-to-date Asian case studies, it will help readers have a better understanding of the creation, management and evolution of brands. - Professor John Quelch, Harvard Business School

It is often said that the 21st Century is Asia's. It is very encouraging to see many Asian brands succeeding, as wonderfully showcased by Paul Temporal, both regionally and globally. Branding is investment for the future.

The Official Scrabble Brand Word-Finder: The Ultimate Playing Companion to America's Favorite Word Game

The Official Scrabble Brand Word-Finder: The Ultimate Playing Companion to America's Favorite Word Game Review

See more picture

The Official Scrabbler Brand Word-Finder is designed with one thing in mind: scoring big points. The method is simple--present as many playable words as possible, in one place, for easy reference during a game. Over 60,000 high-scoring words are arranged alphabetically by first letter and by inside letters, providing the widest array of possible word variations. This innovative format allows Scrabbler fanatics to consider hundreds of potential plays with one quick glance. The Word-Finder is also a one-of-a-kind resource for the obscure words sometimes necessary to get you out of a pinch--like when you're stuck with a "z" and an "h" and time is running out ("hazard": 19 points).

In this straightforward format, standard suggestions are listed in regular type, high-scoring words (worth 10 to 14 points) are listed in bold face, and extra high-scoring words (worth 15 points or more) are marked with an asterisk. A quick scan of the word suggestions invariably leads to a variety of possible plays. A handy dictionary of prefixes, suffixes and plurals provides ideas for adding even more points to your score, and "Ten Tips for a Better Game" addresses winning Scrabbler strategies. The Official Scrabbler Brand Word-Finder features a complete list of every accepted two-letter and three-letter word, and there's even a Quick Check Usage Guide listing all the acceptable words in special categories like "Animal" and "Medical" that aren't always included in standard dictionaries--no more confusion as to whether an "apteryx" is, in fact, an animal (it is: 19 points), or what the acceptable term is for someone who has received a vaccine (a "vaccinee": 15 points).

The Official Scrabbler Brand Word-Finder reflects changes to the last three editions of The Official Scrabbler Dictionary, and is updated with the most current additions to the Scrabbler lexicon with fun new words like "yo" and "ab." Whether you're new to the game or a seasoned pro, the Word-Finder is an indispensable tool for becoming a more successful player.
